Endicott Mayor Linda Jackson says she is recommending the Village Board rescind the restrictions on recently passed recycling operations and allow the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to work out the next steps in the proposed development of a lithium/ion battery recycling facility in the Village.

The DEC recently reopened the comment period on the proposal from SungEel MCC Americas.

The comment period was restarted after concerns were raised about whether earlier permit information accurately indicated some of the batteries to be recycled could contain poly fluoroalkyl material.

The Village had taken steps to rezone the property on the Huron Campus in a step the Mayor says was intended to add safety restrictions in the area.

In a statement, Jackson says the DEC recently proved to “be responsive to the watchdog role they play” over the company’s proposal, prompting her to recommend letting the agency work out the next phase of the permit review process.

At the same time, Jackson says she doesn’t want the village to get the reputation of being against all business and new technology, especially as Village businesses and restaurants look to reopen as soon as they can after pandemic restrictions are lifted.
