Endicott Man Sentenced for Crash That Seriously Injured Broome Deputy

The Endicott man who pleaded guilty in August to felony aggravated vehicular assault and felony assault in connection with a wrong-way crash that injured a Broome County Sheriff's Deputy will serve 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison.

According to the Broome County District Attorney's office, 34-year-old Daniel Butash was sentenced (October 11) for the February crash that left Broome County Sheriff's Deputy Kristy Botsford with serious injuries.

Butash was driving a 2018 Tesla on Route 17 in Vestal in the early morning hours of February 1 when he plowed into the Deputy's sport utility vehicle as she responded to assist Vestal Police and other authorities with the report of a wrong-way driver.

The District Attorney's office says Butash had a blood alcohol content of at least .18% at the time of the crash. Prosecutors had maintained the Endicott man's B.A.C. was .25% when his car slammed into the Sheriff's Department SUV at 60 mph.

The Deputy was pinned in the patrol vehicle for hours in sub-freezing temperatures while rescuers worked to free her and still is recovering from injuries sustained in the collision.
