Dorchester Park Beach Reopening After Algae Bloom Problem

Visitors to a park in northern Broome County will soon be able to use the beach again, two weeks after it was closed because of issues related to an algae bloom.

County parks officials Tuesday afternoon announced the decision to reopen the beach at Dorchester Park. The beach was shut down on July 21 as a protective measure.

According to a news release from the county executive's office, the waterfront at the park north of Whitney Point has been cleared following additional testing. The beach is scheduled to reopen Wednesday.

The hours for swimming and boat rentals at the park are from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

According to the New York State Department of Health, some blue-green algae can produce toxins. Exposure to algae can cause possible health problems in people and animals.
