Drivers trying to travel through downtown Binghamton came to a stop for an extended period because of a traffic signal problem caused by a disabled vehicle.

The trouble on Court Street developed shortly after noon Wednesday when a truck operated by Behlog & Son Produce of Conklin came to a halt just west of the roundabout.

The truck had been leaking transmission fluid for some distance. The vehicle stopped directly over a vehicle detection loop in the pavement. That caused the traffic signal at Court and State streets to remain red for motorists in all directions.

Traffic backed up on both streets. Stopped eastbound vehicles could be seen on the Court Street bridge over the Chenango River.

Binghamton police officers were sent to Court and State to direct drivers through the intersection while the signal was not operating.

A heavy-duty tow truck was called to haul away the disabled vehicle.
