Popular Canned Beef Stew Recalled in New York Over Wood Contamination
If you’ve got a few cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew stashed away in your pantry, it’s time to double-check those labels.
On May 28, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that Hormel Foods Corporation is recalling more than 256,000 pounds of the product due to possible contamination with wood particles.
What You’re Looking For on the Label
The product in question is 20-ounce cans of Dinty Moore BEEF STEW with a “BEST BY FEB 2028” date and lot code “T02045” printed on the metal can. You might notice an extra number at the end of the lot code, that’s okay. The establishment number is “EST 199G.”

These cans were produced in February 2025 and shipped to stores across the country, including right here in New York. If you picked up a can before February 2025, you’re in the clear. But if you have one that matches the details above, don’t eat it. Toss it or return it to the store for an exchange.
Why the Recall?
Hormel received multiple complaints from customers who found bits of wood in their stew. No injuries have been reported, and the USDA says there are no confirmed cases of anyone getting hurt from the contaminated cans. Still, if you think you may have eaten the product and feel unwell or are concerned, it’s a good idea to contact your healthcare provider.
This Isn’t As Rare As You’d Think
It might sound surprising (and kind of gross), but foreign objects like wood, plastic, or rubber making their way into food products isn’t unusual. In fact, these are some of the most common reasons for recalls. They can cause mouth injuries, broken teeth, digestive issues, or even choking if swallowed.

Need Help or Have Questions?
Hormel has a hotline for anyone who wants more info. You can call 800-523-4635, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. or 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
