Date Set for Reopening Vestal Road Near Sewage Plant

Binghamton officials say a section of Vestal Road that's been closed to two-way traffic for more than three years will be back in service soon.

According to Deputy Mayor Jared Kraham, the roadway in the area of the Binghamton-Johnson City Joint Sewage Treatment Plant should reopen by November 4.

Kraham Thursday afternoon said it's possible the reopening of Vestal Road could occur before that date.

The segment of the roadway between Murray Hill and Bunn Hill roads has been closed to westbound traffic since May 2016.

The closure of the county-controlled road occurred to facilitate the major construction project at the sewage treatment facility.

The detour has caused significant backups of westbound traffic on the Vestal Parkway during high-volume travel periods on weekday mornings and afternoons.

Vestal town supervisor John Schaffer three weeks ago said the closure had "gone on for too long."

Schaffer said he wanted Vestal Road reopened soon. He could not be reached to comment on the announcement by the city to permit traffic to be restored by early next month.
