COVID-19 Antibody Testing at Wegmans Johnson City Store

An initial round of COVID-19 antibody testing has been launched by the state health department at supermarkets, including at the Wegmans store in Johnson City.

Broome County public health director Rebecca Kaufman said she was advised that the testing at the store near the Oakdale Mall occurred on Sunday.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Kaufman said she believes 100 people were sampled at the store for the antibody testing initiative. She said no other Broome County sites were involved in the first round but she hopes more testing will be conducted.

Governor Cuomo has said 3,000 people will be tested in an effort to determine the percentage of New Yorkers who have been exposed to the coronavirus.

During his Monday afternoon briefing, Cuomo said people are being selected randomly for the antibody testing in an effort to come up with a representative statewide sample.

The information obtained from the tests will help state officials develop reopening plans.
