It is one of Otsego County's great icons.  Historic Doubleday Field, the "home of baseball" and a landmark in the village's downtown business district, will celebrate its 101st birthday on Labor Day.  There will be a celebration, a proclamation and a baseball game to herald the event.

According to cooperstownny.org the first pitch ever thrown at Doubleday Field happened on Labor Day of 1920.  The game on that day was between a team from Oneonta and one from Milford, NY.  Since that day, Doubleday Field has hosted Major and Minor League teams, professional, semi-pro and amateur baseball, and continues to host hundreds of games
each year.

After a year long renovation of both the field and the plaza outside, the historic ballpark is ready to take on new generations of fans who visit Cooperstown.

On September 6th, at 1:00 PM, to commemorate an important birthday
of one of Cooperstown’s treasures the speakers will include
include Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh, State Senator Peter Oberacker, and
Doubleday Field Committee Chair Hanna Bergene. Senator Oberacker will
read a proclamation from the State of New York, and Mayor Tillapaugh
will honor Joe Harris, longtime groundskeeper at Doubleday Field.

The ceremony will be followed by a Cooperstown Central School Alumni
baseball game, organized by Peter Henrici.

The field and the surrounding plaza look fantastic.  Of note be sure and see that the famous statue, The Sandlot Kid, has been move to a more prominent place in the plaza, making it much more accessible for the thousands of tourists who are eager to get a "selfie" with the young boy playing ball.
