Workers have started building a solar energy facility next to an elementary school in the town of Maine.

A 4.1 megawatt solar array is being constructed in an empty field on a parcel that was acquired by the Maine-Endwell School District more than a decade ago.

The $7.2 million facility is located just south of the Maine Memorial Elementary School on Route 26.

Renovus Energy of Ithaca is developing the project. The company conducted a feasibility study that concluded the solar farm would produce enough power to meet all of the school district's energy needs. The electricity generated by the facility will be sold to NYSEG.

According to the Maine-Endwell website, the energy produced by the complex, along with state aid and grants, will offset all of the school district electricity costs.

The project also is expected to generate an average of $240,000 in annual revenue.

Renovus and school district officials were not available Friday to provide information as to when the facility is expected to go online.
