Construction Access Road Built at Binghamton’s Recreation Park
Heavy equipment is being staged and an access road is being constructed at Recreation Park in Binghamton.
The work is underway as part of a project to install new tennis courts at the West Side park.
Broome Bituminous Products of Vestal is the general contractor for the job, which was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Levene Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger event that had been scheduled for the site last July was canceled.
City officials had hoped ground would be broken for the new courts over the summer. The work was delayed because it was not deemed to be an essential project.
The old courts are expected to be removed soon and crews will do some preliminary work in coming weeks as weather conditions permit.
The access road will allow construction work to go forward with minimal disruption to traffic on Beethoven Street and Seminary Avenue near the project site.
The new facility will be named the Harper M. Stantz Memorial Courts at Recreation Park. Stantz died in March 2019 after she was struck by a vehicle shortly after she played tennis with a friend at the park.
