NYSEG is dredging and disposing of about 950 cubic yards of contaminated river sediment and will be backfilling with materials like soil and armor stone.

The DEC had estimated the work to begin last September and last four months but residents and passing motorists have been reporting the large equipment behind the former Hansmans Mills facility on Upper Court Street and closer to the Tompkins Street Bridge over the past few days.  Poor river conditions last fall apparently delayed the start of the work.

The cleanup work has been estimated to cost about $2,600,000.

The project is expected to be completed this summer.

According to State Superfund papers, the site is owned by New York State Electric and Gas as was previously remediated by the installation of a barrier wall, coal tar collection wells and sealing of the storm sewer pipe leading to the river.

The project information is available at the NYDEC website using site code 704031.
