Olympic Gold Medalist To Speak in Binghamton, New York
Binghamton University Athletics will be hosting its Annual Celebrating Women’s Athletic Luncheon on Monday, April 15th. The event raises funds to support the Binghamton University Women's Athletic Scholarship Fund.
The luncheon has raised over $500,000 since its inception to support female athletes at Binghamton University. This year's event will feature Angel McCoughtry. She is an American professional basketball player who has had a career in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and on the international stage.
McCoughtry was a two-time Olympic gold medalist and has played for different teams in the WNBA, including the Atlanta Dream and the Minnesota Lynx. She was named Big East Player of the Year during her sophomore year at the University of Louisville. She also received several All-American honors during her college career.
In 2009, McCoughtry was the first overall pick by the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA draft. She made a name for herself as a big-time scorer and was named the Rookie of the Year. McCoughtry's helped lead the Dream to the WNBA Finals in 2010 and 2011, setting records along the way.
Throughout her career, McCoughtry was known for her scoring and defensive skills. She consistently averaged over 20 points per game during her career and was named to the WNBA All-Star team many times.
One year, McCoughtry suffered some injuries that sidelined her for the entire season. In 2020, she made a comeback with the Las Vegas Aces and played a role in leading the team to the WNBA Finals. In February 2022, McCoughtry signed with the Minnesota Lynx as an unrestricted free agent, adding another chapter to her basketball career.
McCoughtry will bring inspiration to the Celebrating Women's Athletic Luncheon at Binghamton University. Her talk will motivate young female athletes, and highlight the importance of supporting female athletes in financial assistance.
The Celebrating Women's Athletics Luncheon is a great chance for the community to show their support for female athletes. For more information about the event, call 777-2849 or visit BUBearcats.com.
