An abandoned Johnson City industrial building is to become part of Binghamton University's expanding health sciences campus.

University president Harvey Stenger said the massive structure once used by Ozalid Corporation will be renovated for future use for making pharmaceutical products.

Stenger said the school is in the process of closing on the property at 18 Park Street, which Ozalid utilized until 1985.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Friday, Stenger said the exterior of the historic structure will be maintained.

The university will use the complex as a place to work with future industrial partners.

Stenger said "the first floor of that building is a perfect site for manufacturing." He said a large footprint is not needed for the production of pharmaceuticals.

Stenger said he's been inside the structure and found it to be in generally good condition. He said there's a lot of steel and concrete in the building with little wood, so it should be "easier to rebuild"

Meanwhile, work is continuing on a former Endicott Johnson building on Corliss Avenue which is being transformed into the new home for the Decker School of Nursing.
