Broome Plans Record Road Works

Broome County officials say, in spite of the higher prices for petroleum products that are used in the production of asphalt paving material, a record amount of roadwork is getting underway in the area for 2022.

County Executive Jason Garnar says fixing and replacing infrastructure remains one of the biggest issues for residents.

Garnar and Deputy Commissioner of Public Works, Sue Brown June 8 announced while last year 63 miles of bumpy roads were addressed, around 74 miles of road will be milled and paved or chipped and sealed this year.

The 2022 highway reconstruction and rehabilitation plan includes more than 20 projects.

County officials say additional funding from the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program or “CHIPS” and close to $2 million in PAVE NY pothole-filling money is helping to cover project costs, including the increased price of petroleum.

Garnar says some of the roads targeted for work “haven’t been touched in years.”

The Broome County Department of Public Works plans regular updates on road projects.

County officials say weekly planned roadwork is to be posted through the media on Fridays during the construction season.

Meanwhile, motorists are reminded to use caution in all work zones, even one where there may not be obvious activity.
