While Broome County is looking at an abysmal financial picture due to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, it is not going to cut costs by closing the parks.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says Dorchester Park is the last park to open its beaches for the summer this weekend.  All the beaches at county parks will be open seven days a week through Labor Day.  Nathanial Cole and Greenwood Park beaches had already reopened.

Garnar says the County has turned to offering furloughs for workers and cut travel to try to save money as sales tax revenues dwindled during the New York on Pause shut-down.

The County Executive says while governments often look at closing parks during tough financial times, he didn’t want to go that route since residents already have fewer choices of things they can do during the summer.
