Think Your Child’s Car Seat Is Installed Right? 95% in Broome County Aren’t

Did you know car crashes are one of the leading causes of death for kids between one and 13 years old? It’s scary stuff, but here’s the good news- using child safety seats the right way can seriously reduce those risks by up to 71% for babies and 54% for toddlers.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Most parents and caregivers think they’ve got the car seat situation down pat, but the truth is, almost half of all child seats nationwide are installed incorrectly. Here in Broome County, that number is even higher, around 95%. That’s a big deal because even small mistakes can make a huge difference in an accident.

What’s Happening and When

To help families make sure that their child safety seats are installed properly, the Broome County Traffic Safety Education Program has teamed up with the Broome County Sheriff’s Office to offer a free car seat inspection event this Friday, June 20, from 3 p.m. to 5p.m. The event will take place at 155 Lt. VanWinkle Drive. No appointment is needed, just show up!

What to Expect at the Event

Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on hand to check your car seats from top to bottom. They’ll make sure your seat is installed properly, that the harness fits right, that the seat isn’t expired, and overall that it’s as safe as possible. Bring your child’s car seat, your little one, your vehicle, and if you have them, the manuals for both the seat and the car.
