Broome County leaders are standing shoulder to shoulder with the family of 13 year old Brennan Loveless as the man responsible for his death is now being considered for parole. Community members are being asked to speak out before the New York State Parole Board makes its decision.

A Tragic Loss on New Year’s Day

On January 1, 2023, Brennan Loveless was riding his bike near his home in Sanitaria Springs when he was struck and killed by a pickup truck. The driver, 37 year old Bradley Law of Harpursville, fled the scene. Investigators later discovered that he tried to cover up the crash by staging a fake accident with a deer.

Charges and Sentencing

Law was initially charged with criminally negligent homicide. He ultimately pleaded guilty to attempted leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and criminal possession of a firearm.

While Law was expected to serve two concurrent sentences of 1 1/3 to 4 years, his behavior before sentencing changed everything. Law was arrested for choking his girlfriend and for violating an order of protection. Because of these additional crimes, his punishment was increased to two back-to-back sentences, totaling 2 2/3 to 8 years in prison.

Parole Consideration

Now, less than two years later, Brennan’s family has been notified that Law will appear before the Parole Board in September for an interview on his first of two consecutive sentences. This possibility of early release has reopened wounds for the family and stirred strong reactions throughout the community.

Leaders Speak Out

On Monday, Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar and District Attorney Paul Battisti stood with the Loveless family, urging the community to take action. Sheriff Akshar emphasized that Bradley Law struck and killed a 13-year-old boy on New Year’s Day, then fled while Brennan was left dying on the side of the road.

Akshar noted that Law went on to stage a cover up and lie about his crimes, and pointed out that Law’s continued disregard for the law before even being sentenced showed a clear lack of remorse. Akshar said they were united with Brennan’s family and asked the community to rally with them to ensure the Parole Board keeps Law where he belongs.

District Attorney Battisti stressed that the community has not forgotten Brennan Loveless and will not remain silent as the man responsible for his death seeks an early release. He explained that Law showed no regard for human life when he abandoned a 13 year old child to die on the roadside and that Law’s ongoing criminal actions prove he is still a danger to society.

Battisti said they stand with Brennan’s family and are urging the Parole Board to deny parole for the sake of justice, for the safety of the community, and in memory of a young life cut far too short.
