Some people who live near the site of a planned 70-apartment complex in downtown Binghamton have raised concerns about the proposal.

A Westchester County developer wants to build what's been dubbed the $24 million "Stadium Lofts" project on city-owned property near the site of the future fire department headquarters.

The north side of a four- to five-story building would face Henry Street. The south side of the proposed complex would be wedged between two existing houses on Pine Street.

Kathy Staples, who lives next door to the site, said there are parking issues in the Pine Street neighborhood now. She believes the situation would get worse if the project is allowed to be built as planned.

Erik Leonard, who has lived on Pine Street near where the complex would be constructed, said it's inappropriate for the developer to be "shoving this building in there."

Leonard is concerned that the apartment project could cause shadows on the expensive solar panel installation on the roof of his home. He said this is not the type of development that people in the Pine Street neighborhood want.

The southern component of the proposed apartment complex would be three stories with nine one-bedroom and three two-bedroom units.

The city Zoning Board of Appeals has scheduled a public hearing on a request for a variance. The hearing is to be held September 6 at 5:20 p.m.

The public will not be allowed to attend the meeting in person. The meeting can be viewed remotely by going to this LINK.
