Binghamton Police Union: No Endorsement for Broome DA
The Binghamton Police Benevolent Association is not endorsing a candidate for Broome County district attorney.
The union representing city law enforcement officers issued a statement late Friday afternoon noting the position is "in accordance with our longstanding practice."
The statement from the PBA board of trustees said: "Our individual members are encouraged to support the candidate they feel will best represent the interest of public safety in Broome County."
The statement indicated that union officials would have no further comment about the campaign.
Chief assistant district attorney Michael Korchak and Binghamton lawyer Paul Battisti are seeking the Republican nomination in the June 25 primary. The Democratic candidate is Debra Gelson, an attorney at Tully Rinckey PLLC in Binghamton.
Some law enforcement and union officials have made endorsements ahead of the GOP primary. Some Broome County police officials have said they will refrain from publicly endorsing a candidate because they don't believe it's appropriate for them to do so.
