People who live near where a 12-year-old Binghamton girl was fatally shot say they are afraid because they never expected something like that would happen in their neighborhood.

City police have said Aliza Spencer was shot in the chest around 10 p.m. Thursday as she walked on Bigelow Street with her father and brother.

Aliza was rushed to a hospital where she died a short time later. Investigators have released few details about the circumstances surrounding the East Side killing.

Although the neighborhood has generally regarded as quiet, a man who spoke with WNBF News on Sunday afternoon said he hears gunshots in the area on a fairly regular basis.

The resident said he hadn't thought much about the single shot that he heard late Thursday night until the commotion that ensued down the street from his home.

The man and others in the neighborhood expressed frustration that city officials have provided very little information about the shooting and no description of a possible suspect.

A woman who lives on the street with her four young children said she was concerned for her own safety and the safety of her kids.
