On March 20, 2020, then New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the state would be essentially shutting down for a two week period to "flatten the curve," an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Little did New Yorkers know that the two-week shutdown would morph into a nearly two-year situation. We were suddenly thrust into mask-wearing, social distancing, working from home, and even educating our own children at home.

We lived through toilet paper shortages, and bare store shelves thanks to shipping container issues. We went months, some even literally years, without being able to see loved ones face to face.

In February 2022, Cuomo's replacement, Governor Kathy Hochul lessened the restrictions in New York and while some restrictions remain in place such as in hospitals and in nursing homes, all other restrictions have been lifted.

The last two years felt much like a rollercoaster of emotions for New Yorkers and they did what many do when plagued by stress, they reached for a drink and state officials made it easy by introducing the temporary legalization of to-go alcoholic drinks from bars and restaurants which has since become an actual thing.

Ironically, Rehabs.com commissioned a study to look into which of the 100 largest cities and towns in New York shared the most alcohol-related posts on Instagram, during the course of the pandemic and Binghamton placed on the list at number 22 out of the 100 cities and towns.

According to the study, there was 314 public Instagram posts shared from Binghamton that were related to alcohol or being drunk. The town with the highest number of alcohol-related posts during the pandemic was Saratoga Springs with 404 public posts while the town with the fewest number of public posts centered around alcohol was Freeport with only 15 posts.

If you or someone you love has developed a problem with alcohol and you aren't sure where to turn, the Addiction Center of the Broome County is available to help.
