A building on Binghamton's North Side that was wrecked by a fire on the Fourth of July holiday weekend has been torn down.

People who live near the house at 556 State Street said they were surprised that the structure was demolished so soon after the blaze.

Authorities said the July 5 fire was caused by illegal pyrotechnics. Police charged 31-year-old Alexander Parsons with felony arson in connection with the blaze.

Workers from LCP Group of Vestal showed up at the site of the heavily-damaged house Thursday and took down the structure.

Broome County records indicate the property is owned by a resident of Lakewood, New Jersey.

Binghamton city officials were not available to discuss who would pay for the demolition work.
