Binghamton Fire Chief Daniel Eggleston to Retire This Month

Daniel Eggleston, the man who has led the Binghamton Fire Department for the past five years, is preparing to leave his job as chief.

Eggleston on Wednesday advised members of the department that he intends to retire by the end of the month. He had been expected to continue as fire chief until the end of the year but that timetable changed due to health concerns, according to people familiar with the situation.

Eggleston became fire chief in April 2016, following the retirement of Daniel Thomas.

Eggleston was hired as a firefighter in 1984. He was the city fire marshal for about 12 years before he was appointed chief.

Eggleston has not been available to comment on his decision to leave the fire department.

Mayor Richard David has not returned calls seeking information on who will serve as acting fire chief after Eggleston's departure.
