So why have Southern Tier gasoline prices jumped at the pumps in the last few weeks?  According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline increased by 16 cents in the past month in the Binghamton market.

While other parts of the state have seen a sharp increase, the average pump price rose more than 8 cents a gallon in Binghamton alone.

Industry analysts point to increases in crude oil prices as a big factor in the ongoing trend toward costlier gasoline.  Prices in California soared even more as prices went up 25 cents a gallon for regular.  California prices have been affected by problems at refineries that supply the state's gas stations.

Despite the recent increases in the Greater Binghamton area, average local gas prices remain $1.15 a gallon lower than they were a year ago.
