If you feel like getting your kids ready for school gets more expensive every year, you’re not alone. A new study from BadCredit.org says that two out of three parents would even go into debt just so their kids fit in at school. For many families across New York, back to school shopping has become more than just a yearly chore it’s an emotional and financial struggle.

Parents Spending More Than They Can Afford

The study says that 57 percent of parents admit to overspending because they don’t want to disappoint their kids. Parents are buying the latest clothes, backpacks, and extras so their children don’t feel left out. Gen Z parents were the most likely to overspend, with nearly three out of four saying they do it, compared to just over half of Gen X parents.

Guilt and Pressure Add to the Stress

Many parents say they feel guilty if they don't get name-brand items. Nearly half of those surveyed said they feel inadequate when money is tight. With social media showing kids what their peers have, the pressure on parents to spend more even when they can’t afford it has never been greater. Remember people, social media is just a highlight reel, not true reality.

No Budget Talks at Home

One of the biggest problems? Most families aren’t talking about money. The study found that 59 percent of parents haven’t made a back-to-school budget with their kids. A third of parents said they can’t cover school expenses without leaning on credit cards, “Buy Now, Pay Later” services, or dipping into savings. For families already stretched thin, these choices can lead to long-term debt.

Should Schools Help More?

Many parents think the answer is for schools to step in. Over 50 percent of parents in the study said public schools should cover the cost of school supplies, even if it means higher local taxes.

Younger generations were especially supportive of this idea. They think that if all students had the same basic supplies, families wouldn’t feel such a heavy burden each school year.
