Sad Day for Apalachin As Longtime Business Closes Its Doors

It's a sad day for Apalachin as a locally owned and operated business that has served its community for 63 years has closed its doors.

For over 60 years, the Apalachin Pharmacy has served the community with a friendly smile, answering questions about medications, filling prescriptions, giving flu shots, and helping with over-the-counter medications.

According to the website for Apalachin Pharmacy, the business has been in operation since 1959 and since 1994, or just shy of 30 years, it has been owned by the same person. However, the Apalachin Pharmacy ceased operations as of the late evening hours of Monday, March 29.

A call to the pharmacy was answered not by a local voice but rather by a computer-generated recording from a national pharmacy chain informing Townsquare Media that the store was closed and that anyone looking to fill an existing prescription should use the CVS.com store locator to find their nearest CVS Pharmacy.

Townsquare Media reached out to the CVS Pharmacy corporate offices and asked: Has CVS Pharmacy bought out Apalachin Pharmacy? And, does CVS have any current plans to take over the Apalachin Pharmacy building?

Matt Blanchette, Senior Manager of Retail Communications for CVS Pharmacy responded by saying, "CVS Pharmacy has entered into an agreement to acquire the retail prescription records of Apalachin Pharmacy..." Blanchette continued, "...prescription records will be transferred securely and confidentially to the conveniently located nearby CVS Pharmacy located at 1008 Union Center Maine Highway in Endicott."

Additionally, CVS Pharmacy representatives confirmed that former Apalachin Pharmacy employees were offered employment with local CVS Pharmacy locations.

Townsquare Media spoke with an employee at the Town of Owego Clerk's Office and they were able to confirm that the Apalachin Pharmacy has closed but they were not able to confirm whether or not the UPS Store and gift shop portion of the business would remain open.
