One of the things I enjoy about winter in the Southern Tier is the Almost Annual Crappie Derby.  It looks like it might live up to it's name again this year.

Almost every year this fun, family event happens at Whitney Point Lake.  The organizers of this event have a little something for everyone.  A concession stand on the ice with lots of hot chocolate, coffee and food to warm your body.  They have a meteorologist from NOAA on hand to educate and inform the kids (young and old.) They drill a hole in the ice and put a camera in it, so you can see what it looks like and maybe even see a fish.

It's a competition but most of the people are there for fun and a great experience to share with the kids. Last year the event had to be cancelled because of the warm weather.  I think it might have been cancelled the year before as well.  The event has once again been postponed again because of the warm weather, the temperatures this weekend will be in the mid 50's.  It's been rescheduled from January 26th to February 9th. Organizers are hoping the this postponement will give enough time for the ice to become thick enough.

We'll let you know when we find out the latest,  but it looks like it will once again be a almost annual event (as in we almost had it this year.)
