Update: According to Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response, all 17 of the miners are out and all are safe!

Previously reported: According to reports, emergency crews have been working since late Wednesday night to free 17 miners who are trapped in an elevator deep below the ground at the Cargill salt mine in Tompkins County.

The miners were about to start their 10pm shift on Wednesday night when they became stuck. A spokesperson for Cargill says that no one was injured and that the company has been in constant contact with the trapped miners.

The Ithaca Fire Department reports that they're helping with the "major rescue" at the Cargill salt mine in Lansing. The Fire Department reported in a statement posted to Facebook that the miners are trapped inside an elevator that is more almost 800 feet down an access shaft.

According to the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response, a  crane has been brought in to assist with extricating the miners and the trapped workers have been given radios and supplies.
