Police officers from several law enforcement agencies are learning SWAT team skills in a course now underway in Broome County.

The specialized training puts officers through a range of scenarios they can expect to encounter as members of a special weapons and tactics - SWAT - team.

Detective Brian Kittle and Sergeant Jan Cower of the Broome County Sheriff's Office developed the curriculum and are running the four-week course.

Some of the training is being conducted at the sheriff's department headquarters in the town of Dickinson.

Participants also have spent some time learning about so-called "tubular assaults" in sessions at the Chenango Valley school bus garage and the BC Transit headquarters in Vestal.

Officers from Binghamton, Johnson City, Endicott and Vestal are participating in the course, along with representatives of agencies from Chenango, Tompkins and Madison counties.
