Binghamton police are investigating a shooting which claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl.

The shooting happened on Bigelow Street just south of East Frederick Street around 10 p.m. Thursday.

City police have released no information about the apparent drive-by shooting. But Mayor Jared Kraham sent a message on Twitter several hours after the incident to confirm an investigation is underway.

The shooting scene is about two blocks north of Calvin Coolidge Elementary School.

A Bigelow Street resident said there was frenzied activity minutes after the incident. He said he heard a police officer make a frantic call for an ambulance as CPR was being performed on the girl.

Police closed Bigelow Street between East Frederick and Chamberlain streets after the shooting. Chamberlain Street also was sealed off between Bigelow and Ballard streets for hours as detectives searched the area for shell casings and other possible evidence.
