All kinds of women were shoved into the spotlight this year and I thought it might be nice to take a break from from the women who were celebrated for shedding their clothes on magazine covers and falling down drunk on reality shows and instead focus on women who made a real difference in the lives of people everywhere.

Here are four of my favorite:

  • Malala Yousafzai – Malala is the Pakastani teen activist who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work fighting for the rights for girls to be educated (after she was shot in the head by the Taliban, no less).
  • Maryam Mirzakhami – Maryam is a professor of mathematics at Stanford University and was the first women to receive the Nobel Prize for Mathematics.
  • Kacy Catanzaro -  Kacy is the first woman to ever qualify for finals on the grueling physical obstacle course that is American Ninja Warrior.
  • Mo'ne Davis – Mo'ne is the 13-year-old girl who threw a shut-out game at the Little League World Series

There were lots of women to be proud of this year. Let's not forget that.
