When I was in school, a person's nationality, religious preference, social status and so forth didn't matter. We were all equals and respected each other equally.

Public schools in Montgomery County, Maryland have decided to cave to the insanely politically correct world we live in and will make no mention of any religious holidays from now on.

The board of education voted last week to eliminate references to all religious holidays including Christmas, Easter and Rosh Hashanah. While students will continue to have days off in observance of these holidays, they will not be printed on the school district's official calendar.

The decision came amid pressure from the Muslim community, which has been asking the school district to give equal recognition to the holiday of Eid al-Adha. Rather than simply include the holiday in the school year, the board of ed chose to avoid the issue and just leave all religious observances off the calendar.

Why in the world would this school district think it would be a better idea to remove all religious holidays than to include one more? Schools teach about Christmas, Easter, Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah, Kwanza and others, so why not respect the beliefs of their Muslim community and touch on Eid al-Adha? Teaching avoidance is exactly what this school district is doing and in doing so is only encouraging their students to be intolerant.

By the way, if you don't know what Eid al-Adah is here's the scoop:

Eid al-Adha, also called the Feast of the Sacrifice, the "Major Festival", the "Greater Eid", Baqr'Eid, or Tabaski, is the second of two religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year. It honors the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his promised son, Ishmael, as an act of submission to God's command, before God then intervened to provide Abraham with a lamb to sacrifice instead. The meat from the sacrificed animal is preferred to be divided into three parts. The family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the remaining third is given to the poor and needy.
