Oneonta Mayor Richard Miller died Saturday morning of what's being reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Oneonta Fire Department was called 71-year-old Miller's residence in Oneonta just  before 10:30am on Saturday morning. Police Chief Dennis Nayor spoke with Oneonta's The Daily Star and said that Miller died of an apparent suicide.

The paper also quotes Otsego County Coroner James Hurley as saying the cause of death was a shot to the head with a .22 caliber handgun. He said the gun was registered.

No other details have been released as the investigation continues.

Miller was elected the city's 20th mayor in 2009, having run as an independent candidate, and he was unopposed in seeking a second term in the 2013 elections.
