For all of my life, my dad has been a volunteer firefighter and it's one of the things that he is most proud of and I'm proud of him for doing it.

The number of volunteer firefighters has been declining for years, in fact, the number of volunteers has dropped over 10% since the '80s but you can help change that this weekend.

The Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is having its "RecruitNY" event this weekend, April 24th and 25th. Over the past decade, RecruitNY has helped to add thousands to departments all across the Empire State and they look to keep it going even during this pandemic.

There are only a few career fire departments in our area, so most of us have to depend on volunteer fire companies to provide fire protection.  There are over 30 volunteer fire companies in Broome, Chenango, and Tioga counties and all have a need for more volunteer firefighters.

Fire Department Open House

They will be virtual and traditional Open houses throughout the state including at the West Endicott Fire Department, 133 North Page Avenue in Endicott. They will have a traditional open house on Saturday, April 24th from 12 p.m to 3 p.m.

The Coventry Volunteer Fire Company, 109 North Road in Greene will also be participating on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's your chance to see what the fire department is all about and what they do for the community.

I wish that I had followed in my father's bootsteps and I don't want you to have the same regret that I have. So here's the question I have for you, "Is there a fire in you?" You can go here to see all the fire departments that will be participating in RecruitNY this weekend.
