Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that New York will be once again offering cribs to those in need.

In a press release, the Governor said

With reports to the state showing that unsafe sleeping conditions are a leading cause of child fatalities, this initiative will help New Yorkers with limited resources to provide a safer sleeping environment for their children.”

Last year, over 2,000 portable cribs were requested, but only 1,600 were handed out.  This year, the Office of Children and Families Services will expand the number of Pack n' Play portable cribs to 2,142.

Cribs are being made available first to Local Social Services Districts, and then to Voluntary Agencies, Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelters, and community-based programs funded by OCFS and/or the Local Social Services District.

Requests are being accepted through September 13th.
