It makes me very sad to think that in this day and age there are still kids who have to go to school without the supplies that they need. Not only is it embarrassing for them, but it hinders their education when they're not able to do the work they need to do because they don't have the necessary tools.

The Tioga County Open Door Mission and The Red Door are asking for donations of school backpacks with supplies or $20 to purchase one. The Mission will be hosting a Back to School Bash in Owego and Waverly in August. The Mission's goal is to fill 400 backpacks.

This past winter was brutal and hard on many families in Tioga County and they've got to make the decision to pay heating bills or buy school supplies. Well, with the help of our community, local kids will have new backpacks and school supplies to make a positive start to their school year.

Backpacks and monetary donations can be dropped off at The Open Door Mission at 425 North Avenue in Owego or at The Red Door, 359 Broad Street in Waverly now until July 31, 2014.

The Mission is a local non-profit and when you shop or donate with them, you're helping neighbors and giving a helping hand to the working poor in our community.
