Doctor Joseph Sellepack addressed local business and community leaders this week and said the construction on a small grocery store at the new Canal Plaza on West State Street on Binghamton’s North Side is underway.  Sellepack says the plans are for the project to be ready to open in the spring of 2020.

The 900-thousand dollars project, however, still needs money and fund-raising efforts are still underway.

While the grocery store will be operated by the Broome County Council of Churches, it is not diverting any funds from other programs like the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse, Faith in Action or ramp programs for the financing.

Over 12-thousand people live in the Northside neighborhood which has been designated a “Food Desert” due to its lack of a grocery store within reasonable distance.
