Wild Weather Causes Flooding, Power Outages and Freak Crashes in Tiers

2:15 P.M. UPDATE:

Customers without power is back down into the hundreds in Broome County Friday after more than 2,000 were without power earlier in the day.

As of 2:15 p.m. on Friday, there are still 445 customers without power, mainly in Kirkwood and Colesville.

Still, Delaware and Otsego County have power outages in the thousands.

Thousands in New York State were left without power late Thursday night into Friday morning after a powerful storm plowed across the area.

8:38 A.M. UPDATE:

As of 8:38 a.m. on Friday morning, there are thousands of people without power in the Southern Tier following a powerful Halloween storm.

Crews are assessing the outages, most of which are in Krikwood, Oneonta, and Otego areas.

Emergency Services officials around the Twin Tiers describe Halloween night as "wild" with report after report of trees into power lines, wires down, street flooding and even debris flying into moving vehicles.

As of early November 1, New York State Electric and Gas reported 50,558 customers in its entire service area without power, with over 1,200 of those in Broome County. The majority of counties without electricty were in Western New York.  Erie had 8.444 customer off line at 4 a.m., Steuben County 9,864 and Wayne County with 4.086.

States of Emergency due to flooding were reported in Oneida and Herkimer Counties with no unnecessary travel discouraged.

Chenango County reports Route 12 was shut down from the city line to Hale Street due to flooding.  Water also closed State Highway 8 at White Store Road and County Route 34 in New Berlin.  State Highway 23 in Pharsalia was expected to be closed for an extended period and State Highway 80 near Dunham Road in Smyrna had been closed due to flooding and debris.

In Broome County, authorities reported power out all over the county with specific areas impacted changing almost by the minute but water across the roads had been resolved by 4 a.m.

Wind was also a big issue with New York State Police in Kirkwood reporting a commercial vehicle off the road on Route 17 East and Troopers in Tioga County dealing with a bizarre situation where debris, possibly a highway sign, blew into a passing tractor trailer rupturing the diesel tank on Rout 17 West near Nichols.

With wind gusts topping 40 mph at times, people driving high profile vehicles are advised to slow down and maintain a firm grip on the wheel. Loose items outdoors like Halloween decorations should be secured or moved inside.

NYSEG reminds people to stay away from any wire that is down and assume it is a live power line. Report all trees on wires or wires that are down to the authorities immediately.
