Upstate New York Couple Made Themselves At Home In Someone Else’s Home

When we hear stories of people trespassing in a stranger's house and taking up residence there while the owners are out of town, we think of it happening in far-off places, not right down the road but in this case, right down the road is exactly where it happened.

Can you imagine getting home from being away only to discover that some people decided that it would be perfectly acceptable to not only enter your property but make themselves comfortable without checking with you first to make sure it was okay?

Around 6:31 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, the New York State Police of Cobleskill say that they got a call with a tip regarding suspicions that there were a couple of people trespassing at a house on State Route 7 in Cobleskill.

Upon investigation, New York State Police claim to have found two people from Albany, 44-year-old Melissa Johnson, and 58-year-old Jesus I. Lanauze, making themselves right at home inside an unoccupied house and no, they did not have permission to be there.

According to New York State Police, not only did the couple trespass but they caused damage to both the home and the outbuilding.

State Police arrested Johnson and Lanauze for Criminal Trespass in the second degree, two counts of Criminal Tampering in the third degree, and Conspiracy in the sixth degree before transporting them to State Police Cobleskill.

Johnson and Lanauze were both issued an appearance ticket and are due back in Cobleskill Town Court on August 15 where they'll have a whole lot of explaining to do.
