Voters in the town of Vestal next month will consider a proposal to replace an old fire station with a modern facility.

The new station would be built on the site of the American Legion hall to the west of Jensen Road. The property is located just south of the Kohl's department store.

The legion site was acquired for $607,000 in October 2018 after a referendum approval the purchase. The new facility would replace Station 4, which was built on the Vestal Parkway in 1952.

Vestal fire chief John Paffie said the proposed station would provide more space for equipment. It would have about 15,000 square feet compared to the 9,000 square feet available in the existing station.

The need for a new fire station has been discussed for more than a decade.

Vestal fire district residents will vote January 25 on a proposal to borrow $7.5 million for the building project.

If the plan is approved, Paffie said groundbreaking could occur in May or June. He said construction would probably take about a year to complete.
