Two people walking on Beethoven Street in Binghamton were mowed down by a sport utility vehicle.

The incident happened around 3:20 p.m. Monday less than two blocks south of Recreation Park on the city's West Side.

A person who was nearby when it occurred said it appeared both of the pedestrians who were struck were female.

The pedestrians were on the east side of the street. They were hit by an orange Jeep Wrangler that was southbound on Beethoven Street. After the pedestrians were struck, the vehicle continued traveling south striking a tree and a street sign at the intersection with Lincoln Avenue.

The emergency department at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City was alerted to expect two trauma patients.

The driver of the vehicle apparently was not hurt.

Beethoven Street was closed between Leroy Street and Seminary Avenue for the police investigation.
