Tornado Confirmed Near Dryden

While severe weather during the late afternoon/evening of June 21 mainly skipped Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Cortland Counties, the National Weather Service is confirming a tornado in Tompkins County.

The EF-1 tornado reportedly packed winds of 90 miles per hour, pushed a shed off a foundation, ripped up trees and damaged a fence at Yellow Barn State Forest near Route 38 in Dryden.  In addition to damage in the state forest, tornado damage was reported at a neighboring farm on Irish Settlement Road.

There were no injuries.  The tornado was on the ground for about ten minutes and crossed over two-and-a-half miles according to the National Weather Service.

Scattered power outages were reported by New York State Electric and Gas in Chenango, Tioga and Delaware Counties with most of those restored by late morning or early afternoon. Tompkins County and the Ithaca area, however, reported much heavier storm damage and hundreds of NYSEG customers were without service into the afternoon.
