Toby Keith: ‘I Didn’t Find the Business, the Business Found Me’ [Exclusive Video]
It's hard to envision Toby Keith as anything but a country star, and it sounds as though he'd agree with that. Keith sat down with Sammy Hagar for an upcoming episode of Hagar's Rock and Roll Road Trip TV show to discuss life on the road, his business ventures and more -- including why, exactly, he chose country music instead of another genre.
"That was the most comfortable -- where I wrote, where my wheelhouse was, writing, that's where I fit, and when I sing, that's what I sound like," Keith tells Hagar in the clip above, premiering exclusively on The Boot. "Now, you and me can get up and jam anything we want to do, and we'll make it sound like that, but it was like, the stuff I wrote was more like American country, and that's where it fit, and that's the bars where we got the most money comin' up, so that's where I was stuck.
"They kinda found me," Keith adds. "I didn't find the business, the business found me."
Keith and his Easy Money Band got their start playing honk-tonks in Oklahoma and Texas; he made the move to Nashville in the early 1990s. These days, Keith has 20 No. 1 singles to his name, has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and is a Songwriters Hall of Fame member. His most recent single is "A Few More Cowboys."
Fans can see Hagar's full interview with Keith -- which took place on Keith's 160-acre ranch in Norman, Okla. -- when his episode of Rock and Roll Road Trip With Sammy Hagar airs on Sunday (March 12) at 9PM ET on AXS TV.
