Yesterday in the Southern Tier of New York, we were able to enjoy outdoor dining at a restaurant since early March. The weather cooperated and it looks like it might even be better for this weekend.

I'm sure that you are like most people and want to support our local businesses while eating out again. Eating in the streets will be fun for us but keep in mind that it won't be as enjoyable for the employees.

They have to wear a mask and gloves while it's hot and humid outside. They are gonna be hot and probably a little overwhelmed. Remember with outdoor dining, that means they'll have to do a lot more walking too.

Here are some other things to keep in mind when visiting our local establishments this weekend or any other time for the immediate future:

Don't make mask jokes or give your opinion on masks to your server. They have to wear them. It's never wise to be unkind to your waitress/waiter at any time but especially now. You want to eat, don't you?

You eat. You go. Eat and enjoy your meal but don't sit at the table all night...unless you are spending money. The restaurants have limited space, so don't order an appetizer and water and sit there for a couple of hours.

TIP TIP TIP. I don't think I need to explain why.

Cut them some slack and be happy. You're finally out and they are basically doing a new job, so it may be a little slow.

Remember that you have 3 meals a day every day. This is only one of them, so enjoy it.
