Masks Will Be Required of Everyone in Broome Government Buildings

With Covid-19 cases continuing to increase, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says those who enter county government buildings will have to wear masks.

Garnar on Friday morning announced the requirement will take effect on Monday. He said it's been "very concerning" to see local coronavirus cases rise as quickly as they have.

Broome County now has a "substantial" level of community transmission of Covid, based on federal guidelines.

The county executive said Broome residents are strongly urged to wear masks in all indoor public settings regardless of their vaccination status.

Garnar said there now are 143 active Covid cases in Broome County. He said five county residents are hospitalized due to the coronavirus.

School districts won't be receiving state guidance as they prepare to start classes next month.

For now, the county executive said schools should plan on following guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control. At this time, the CDC is recommending a mask requirement for all students and school employees.

Garnar said the county health department is continuing to provide opportunities for people to be vaccinated. More information about obtaining a Covid vaccine is available by clicking HERE.
