Bye-Bye To The Carrier Dome, Hello New Name For Syracuse, New York’s Beloved Stadium!
I've been going to Syracuse games at the Carrier Dome for so many years and it's given me so many great memories. In 1998, I was sitting in the end zone stands as Donovan McNabb brought the Orange back from a huge deficit to defeat Virginia Tech on the final play of the game.
Donovan McNabb Leads Syracuse Past Virginia Tech
It was right in front of me as McNabb threw a pass to tight end Steve Brominski (from Wilkes-Barre, Pa) on the final play of the game to lead the Cuse to a 28-26 come from behind victory.
In 1982, I was in the nose bleed seats when the Syracuse Orangemen men's basketball team was taking on a red hot Georgetown Hoyas team in front of a national audience. The Cuse had a 75-70 upset win over the Hoyas but the thing that we all remember is when cheerleader Michelle Munn (from Sayre Pa) flipped off the top row and no one caught her. She messaged me and she's doing great today.
That is just a few of the many Carrier Dome memories that I've had. After all these years, the Carrier Dome is no more...kind of. In 1979, Carrier inked a $2.75 million deal with the university for naming rights in perpetuity.
A financial mistake the school has been trying to change for years and it's finally happened. In April, Carrier Global Corp agreed to end Carrier's hold on naming rights to the venue.
New Name For The Syracuse Carrier Dome
Syracuse University and JMA Wireless announced a 10-year partnership for the naming right of the former Carrier Dome. It will be called JMA Wireless Dome but the terms of the deal were not revealed.
Syracuse also announced that JMA Wireless will install the most advanced connectivity offerings inside the dome. JMA has its headquarters in Syracuse and is a global leader in 5G wireless technology.
So it looks like 5G technology will be available at the Carrier...I mean the JMA Wireless Dome soon. JMA has also been selected to provide 5G equipment for SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, where the Super Bowl was held in January.
Syracuse was ahead of its time in 1979 (before naming rights became lucrative) and now we can expect a world-class event experience unlike anything that's been seen at Syracuse University.
