New York Hunter’s Moon – Brightest Supermoon of the Year to Shine This Week
October is treating New Yorkers to a celestial showstopper this Thursday as the full moon will light up the night sky, revealing its enchanting presence as the Hunter's Moon.
This year's Hunter's Moon is gearing up to be an extraordinary sight as it syncs up with a Supermoon, painting the sky with a breathtaking showcase of lunar radiance.
Hunter's Moon Date and Time
The full Moon is set to appear this Thursday, September 17 at 7:26 a.m. EDT, according to NASA. Though the Moon will be positioned below the horizon at this time, skygazers can anticipate its stunning glow post-sunset on Thursday evening. The celestial beauty of the Hunter's Moon will illuminate the nighttime sky from Tuesday evening to Friday morning.
Hunter's Moon Supermoon Status
What sets this October full Moon apart is its Supermoon status, attributed to its occurrence during perigee, the Moon's closest point to Earth. On the night of October 16, the Moon will reach its closest distance to Earth, transforming into a full Moon on the morning of October 17.
NASA's Gordon Johnston notes that this Full Moon marks the third of four consecutive Supermoons, standing out as the brightest of the series, albeit marginally so. Following the Hunter’s Moon, the next full Moon, known as the Beaver Moon, is also anticipated to be a Supermoon on November 15.
Hunter's Moon Historical Significance
Linked to ancient traditions and lore, the Hunter’s Moon follows the Harvest Moon of September, as noted in records dating back to 1710 based on the Farmer’s Almanac. Unlike the designations of other full Moons throughout the year, the Harvest and Hunter's Moons are distinguished by the seasonal context they represent, embodying the essence of their respective time periods.
