A statement from Governor Andrew Cuomo's office says there have been reports in Chemung and Steuben Counties about calls and text messages coming from a number in the 607 area code from someone offering to register them over the phone if they provide personal information.  That is not allowed under New York State law.

Authorities say anyone receiving calls asking for personal information should hang up and report the incident.

Voters have until midnight October 12 to register by mail.  They can also register through the local board of elections and the Department of Motor Vehicles and the New York State registration site online:  www.ny.gov/services/register-vote.

It's also the deadline for changing registered party affiliation if desired prior to the General Election in November.
