Keeping track of possible COVID-19 outbreaks in the Southern Tier may be a little less cut and dried with many counties going to weekly updates with new reports coming on different days of the weeks or opting to forego local updates at all, directing inquiries to the New York State dashboard.

Those compiling the numbers since the start of the pandemic have found there is a disparity between the numbers reported by local health departments and the figures found on the New York State website from day-one.

For example, Broome County posted a weekly update July 19, counting 26 new cases for the week bringing the pandemic total to 18,205.  That averages to 3.7 new cases per day for the week.  New York State July 20 said there had been five new cases in Broome County on July 19.

Cortland County, which is still providing daily updates, reported July 20 one new case while the State dashboard reported two residents had tested positive in the Tuesday update.

Chenango County reported for the period July 13 to the 20th there had been only one new case for a total of 3,520 but the State dashboard said there had been two new cases in Chenango County just on Monday, July 19.
