The National Weather Service and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is advising Southern Tier residents that the danger of out-of-control brush fires is still considered high.

Officials issued a statement May 13 for at least the third day in a row saying due to low relative humidity and winds gusting over 10 miles an hour, there is an elevated risk for wildfire spread in areas that have not seen vegetation fully green-up.

The D.E.C. has listed the fire danger as “High” for the region with no rain in the forecast for May 13.

New York still has a ban on open burning in place until Saturday, May 14.

Local emergency services dispatchers over the past week have reported a few, mainly minor brush fires in the region.

No permits are being issued for burning while the state burn ban is in place.  People who burn brush and other debris are subject to fines.

Some fires, including campfires and ceremonial fires are exempt from the ban.
